Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I get a routine cleaning?

It is recommended that patients get a routine cleaning every 6 months. This, combined with routine care at home, is the best way to achieve good oral health.

Is a routine cleaning and a deep cleaning the same thing?

No. A routine cleaning is a basic dental cleaning that you receive twice each year. A deep cleaning, more specifically known as scaling and root planing, involves cleaning out the periodontal pockets in the gums to remove the bacteria that causes gum disease. The root planing then smoothes out the roots so that the gums can reattach to the teeth. This being said, deep cleanings are much more involved than routine cleanings.

How long does a dental crown last?

Dental crowns last between 10 to 15 years on average. With exceptional oral hygiene, they have been known to last upwards of 20 years.

Does dental insurance cover cosmetic procedures?

Typically, no. Most dental insurance companies view cosmetic procedures as electives and do not cover the cost. Though, occasionally, if a cosmetic procedure is needed to maintain oral health, it may be covered. It depends on the situation and the insurance company. We will be more than happy to help you understand your coverage.

Is a root canal considered oral surgery?

No, a root canal is not considered oral surgery. This treatment is one that is necessary when tooth decay makes its way into the pulp of the tooth. Today, root canal treatment is as common as filling  cavities.

Is an extraction easier than a root canal?

Extraction is not easier than a root canal. Both procedures are very involved – but a root canal treatment aims to save the natural tooth, which is always the goal. In the case of an extraction, additional steps will be needed to preserve oral health and fill the empty space so the teeth are secure in their positions and the bone remains healthy.

Is laser dentistry safe?

Yes, as long as you are receiving laser dentistry by a trained professional. Laser treatments are only safe for teeth and may also be healthier than other dental treatment methods.

Do I need to have someone drive me if I get nitrous oxide?

No. Nitrous oxide is a breathable gas that begins working quickly after it is turned on and stops just as quickly once it stops. There are no after effects and you should be just fine driving yourself. Very few people have a reaction to this type of sedation.
